Digital Signature is a secure method of signing an electronic document. Unlike an Electronic Signature, which is essentially a digitized version of a handwritten signature, a digital signature uses advanced mathematical algorithms to protect the integrity and authenticity of the signed document. Digital signatures are also superior to signing on paper because it provides the ability to verify that the document hasn’t been altered in transit or signed by an impersonator.
A valid digital signature requires Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), which involves the role of a Certificate Authority (CA) in the process. The CA is a type of Trust Service Provider who would provide a digital certificate containing information that can be used to validate the digital signature. PKI also involves using a pair of mathematically generated keys: Private and Public.
In our process of creating a digital signature, the original document is hashed, then each signature is encrypted to the document with the signer’s private key. The private key is for the signer only, while the public key can be openly available and used to validate the signature.
In order to validate the integrity of the digital signature, the validator would use the public keys provided in the digital certificate to decrypt the completed file for a hash value. If the hash matches the original, then it is the authentic version.
